Toward Organic or Local Challenge

Inspired again by Rhonda (how could one not be?) I am posting about this challenge initiated by Jenna’s post here.

I’m working with others on Transition Initiatives lately, as part of my role as a LETS co-ordinator and a member and assistant to the local Seed Savers network.

Food is of course one of the key areas of life addressed during the process of planning a Transition Town.  In fact, it is probably the key!

We as a society have allowed our food system to become so very fragile.  Here in the far north it takes just a few days of flooding to sever the highway completely and cease all deliveries and therefore near-empty the supermarket shelves.  Just a few days! And then there’s the question of quality and sustainability with regard to what’s on those supermarket shelves anyway…

I’ve posted before about my food shopping habits, but Rhonda’s challenge is a timely reminder for me to remain aware…  She asks, “If you’ll eat local/organic/free range and pasture fed meat, poultry, dairy foods or fruit and vegetables at least once a week for the next six months, I want you to join in.”  So for us I’ll focus on at least one main meal a week and look at ALL the ingredients in it.  I think this will open my eyes to just how local/organic we’re eating.

The best outcome would be a meal 100% from our own farm.  Next would be using local organic ingredients.  And the third option would be using local non-organic ingredients.  And lastly, non-local organic ingredients…  Those are my preferences, but Rhonda has left it fairly open as to what you choose to include in your one meal a week.

If you’re up for the challenge, and want to discuss it, you might like to visit the forum on Down To Earth.
