Custard 7 June, 2008
I think my Nana would be amused at the things which fascinate me lately! Tonight I made custard from scratch for the very first time. Now, I’ve had supermarket custard which comes in a carton. And I’ve made custard from custard powder. But I found this recipe on the Simple Savings site and decided to give it a go. We have plenty of milk and eggs, so it’s a cheap dessert for us. Tonight we had this custard with frozen mango a friend brought around. YUM.
2 eggs
3 tbspn cornflour
3 cups milk
3 tbspn sugar
1 tsp vanilla
Mix and whisk first 3 ingredients in a saucepan. Place onto heat and keep whisking until it becomes thick and creamy. Take off the heat and add sugar and vanilla and whisk through. Don’t add sugar whilst on the heat or custard will stick to the pan.
Apparently you can add cocoa to make chocolate custard or add cinnamon or other spices (nutmeg, yum) for a different flavour.
I always thought that home made custard would be lumpy or eggy-tasting or otherwise unacceptable. No idea why I thought that, but this was smooth, creamy and delish!
Thanks for sharing. I stopped buying custard a while back but still haven’t gotten around to making it at home. It’s such a wet, drizzly day here so you’ve inspired me to make it today

Did you get to make it? It’s just lovely - yellow and creamy and vanilla-flavoured! This recipe served eight of us with a bit of fruit for dessert.
I made this tonight - When I tried to make custard before by another recipe, it was declared ‘too eggy’ by the other half, so I’d given up, but this one got the thumbs up! thanks
